Edward Kleinhammer Orchestral Bass Trombone Competition

For bass trombonists ages 25 and under (birth date of January 1, 1984 or later)

Prizes will be announced at a later date

Additional Rules

  • Past winners of the Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic Prize Bass Trombone Competition or the Edward Kleinhammer Orchestral Bass Trombone Competition are not eligible in the 2010 Kleinhammer Bass Trombone Competition.
Previous Winners:

The Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic Prize began in 1993 and changed name in 2008 to Edward Kleinhammer Orchestral Bass Trombone Competition. Read the impressive list of previous winners.

Repertoire Requirements

Preliminary Round

(All items must be recorded in the order listed below)

David Fetter
Dona Nobis Pacem for unaccompanied bass trombone (first 32 bars only)
Wagner
Lohengrin, Prelude to Act III--Letter B to 3 bars before C,

One bar before Letter D to 5 bars after letter E
(Note: These two passages may be recorded separately)

Haydn
Creation - No. 26 Beginning to Letter C

Kodaly
Janos - Battle and Defeat of Napoleon - 5th bar after No. 5 to “Lunga Pausa”

Schumann
Symphony No. 3 - Beginning to 13th bar after Letter A (Note: Don’t count out the 3 bars rest—pause but record continuously)

Wagner
Ride of the Valkyries from Die Walküre - pickup to No. 4 to No. 5; pickup to No. 6 to 3rd bar after No. 7 (3rd trombone part)

Final Round

TBA
Finalists and alternates will be notified of the repertoire by March 15, 2010
