Other teachers along the way include Henry Charles Smith, Allan Chase, Per Brevig and Ed Herman. Following a three-year stint in the U.S. Military Academy Band, he joined the Dallas Symphony in 1972. Two years later, he joined the faculty of Southern Methodist University. He has toured with the Summit Brass Ensemble, and in 1988, he was a member of the World Philharmonic Orchestra in Tokyo, Japan.

As a winner of the Ford Foundation New Music Grant, he has also been a soloist with the Houston Symphony.

Darren McHenry joined the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as the bass trombonist in 1995. He grew up in Atlanta, GA, where he began his musical training with William Hill. He received his bachelor's degree in 1992 from Southern Methodist University, and in 1994, he received his master's degree from the Juilliard School of Music. During that year, he won the Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic Prize and the Donald Yaxley Scholarship. McHenry has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Chattanooga Symphony before joining the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
