Daniel L. Kohut is an internationally known wind instrument pedagogue, author and transcriber of music for band and orchestra. The textbook of direct interest to trombonists is Musical Performance: Learning Theory and Pedagogy, originally published by Prentice-Hall, Inc, and currently published by Stipes Publishing Co., Champaign, IL. The late Arnold Jacobs of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was Kohut’s primary mentor in the writing of this textbook. In 1999, Professor Heinz Fadle translated this textbook into German.

Prior to his appointment at the University of Illinois, he was a professor of clarinet at Ithaca College, an instructor of woodwinds at Arkansas Polytechnic College, and an instrumental teacher for the Brighton and Penfield, New York public schools. He holds a bachelor of music degree from the University of North Texas, and a masters and doctoral degrees from the Eastman School of Music.
