Quotations :: Tone/Sound Concept

William [Bill] Teskey ~ "It's shaped like a trombone it moves like a trombone it even smells like a trombone! but it doesn't SOUND like a trombone!! Let's try again shall we. Put the technique on ice until the noise is bearable."

Contributed by: Mike Carton

Commentary: Bill was the Trombone Professor at the Royal Military School of Music [British Army] and long time principal with the BBC Symphony.

Steve Schoppert ~ "If the part says 4th Trombone - blend. If the part says Bass Trombone - you're on your own..."

Contributed by: Jim Hale

Commentary: Said to me during my freshman year in the Bolton High School Jazz Band (1981). Steve was trying to show the importance of 'being there' even though I was insecure since it was my first year playing in a group.

Frank Crisafulli ~ "If you are going to make a mistake, make it a beautiful one so that everyone will know it was you."

Contributed by: Norm Hanson

Commentary: I think the purpose of this comment was twofold. One, it was to drive home the importance of always playing with the best sound you can make, and two, relax and have some fun.

Michael Mulcahy ~ "Sustain glorious sound"

Contributed by: Tom Burge

Commentary: What more is there?

Ryan Bybee ~ ""Play the sky.""

Contributed by: Elizabeth

Commentary: Before a competition, Mr. Bybee told the low brass the above quote. He wanted our tones to be as dark as the night sky.

Bob Sanders ~ "Make every legato slur a beautiful event in of itself."

Contributed by: Aron Sklar

Commentary: No need to talk about that one.

Frank Harmantas ~ "Put a smile on your sound."

Contributed by: Ken Read

Commentary:

Benoit Poeuf ~ "If you can sing the song you can play it no problem"

Contributed by: Paul Landelle

Commentary: best advice ever

James Gould ~ "In order to produce a good tone, you first must have some idea of what a good tone sounds like."

Contributed by: David Natseway

Commentary: When I was a young music camp student in Arizona(78'), Bud asked "how do you produce a good tone"? My response included breathing, embouchure and posture. This wasn't quite what he was looking for. His response started me doing a lot of effective listening.

Tommy Dorsey ~ "Remember that a beautiful tone is a player's most valuable asset."

Contributed by: Paul Brooke

Commentary: This quote is from Tommy Dorsey's method book "The Modern Trombonist". What else is there to say?

Calvin Schultz ~ "No one really cares how many notes you can play or how fast you can play them if you cannot make a good characteristic trombone sound, so make that your first priority."

Contributed by: Hal Reynolds

Commentary: Cal Schultz was my first private trombone teahcer (in high school) and was a former member of the Tommy Dorsey Band before a collapsed lung ended his playing career. A wonderful man and a great teacher!

Arnold Jacobs ~ "I have two tubas, one in the head and one in the hand. The one in the head is all sound and that's the one I work with. The one in the hand is a mirror of my thought and I let it be that mirror. In order to have that, I have to give it something to reflect."

Contributed by: Brad Edwards

Commentary: He actually said this to me in my first lesson with him. What I didn't tell him was that I already had that exact quote framed and hanging on my wall. Why didn't I tell him? I guessed the probable reply: "Don't frame it. Do it!"
