A Message From Dave

Daniel Schnyder and I have a duo as an offshoot to our trio, which has been together for over a decade with pianist Kenny Drew Jr.

We have Three Trio Cd's: Words Within Music, on Enja records (featuring Bach and Schnyder) Weil to Gershwin (also on Enja, including Schnyder's  bass trombone sonata, 1941, etc,..) and Faust/Worlds Beyond on the Col Legno label.

Daniel and I enjoy playing duo because we give each other a lot of freedom within the music.  I usually play and record the music as soon as it's written, and first learn it metronomically. Once we know a piece, we treat it as if it was a playground - listening, and grooving.

The first two links up are duo versions of one of Schnyder's first trios,.. Link 1 was done in the studio, and link 2 is part of a concert in Dec, 2009 in NY. I thought it might be interesting to hear and see the difference in interpretations and interaction between the two performances. Link 3 will be of the Duo Concertante for tenor and bass trombone. I've played and recorded this duo with Jim Pugh (tenor trombone), Adam Unsworth (french horn) and Daniel (tenor sax). All three recordings are different. (Check out the Pugh Taylor project, duo concertante, on youtube). Link 4 is Around The World, a chamber piece Daniel reduced to duo, and link 5, Schumacher March, was originally a band piece.

If you have questions about the performance or music,  please check out the article I wrote in the 2009 July issue of the ITA Journal, entitled, BE THERE!

I hope you enjoy these videos,
Dave Taylor
